• PAIRINGS

  Groups of two golfers.

• PAR

  The number of strokes a golfer should take to complete a round of golf. Par for each hole is given on the scorecard.

• PARKLAND

  A golf course laid out in grassland.

• PENALTY STROKE

  An additional stroke added to a golfer's score for a rules violation.

• PGA

  Professional Golfers Association

• PICK UP

  To pick up one's golf ball before holing out.

• PIN

  Same as the flag.

• PIN PLACEMENT

  The position of the hole on a putting green.

• PITCH

  A short golf shot lofting the golf ball into the air in a high arc.

• PITCH AND PUTT

  A short golf course designed for approaching and putting.

• PITCH AND RUN

  A golf shot hit with a lower golf club to reduce loft. This allows the golf ball to run after it lands on the putting green.

• PITCHING IRONS

  The short golf irons.

• PITCHING WEDGE

  An iron golf club specifically for making pitch shots.

• PIVOT

  The rotation of the golfer's shoulders, body and pelvis during the golf swing.

• PLAY

  To strike the golf ball with a golf club. The playing the game of golf.

• PLAYING PROFESSIONAL

  A professional golfer who competes in golf tournaments.

• PLAYING THROUGH

  Passing another group of golfers who are playing ahead.

• POT BUNKER

  A smaller deep sand trap with steep sides.

• PRACTICE GREEN

  Putting green set up for putting practice.

• PREFERRED LIE

  Local rules which allow a golfer to improve the lie of the golf ball on the fairway in a specific manner without penalty.

• PRO SHOP

  The golf course shop operated by the head golf professional where golf equipment is sold.

• PROFESSIONAL

  A golfer who receives payment for teaching golf or playing in golf tournaments.

• PROVISIONAL BALL

  A golf ball played if the previously played golf ball may be lost or out of bounds.

• PULL

  A golf ball that goes to the left of the target.

• PUNCH

  Low, controlled golf shot into the wind.

• PUSH

  A golf ball that goes to the right of the target.

• PUTT

  The golf shot made on the putting green.

• PUTT OUT

  To hole the golf ball with a putt.

• PUTTER

  A short shafted golf club with a straight face for putting.

• PUTTING GREEN

  The manicured grassy surface area around the hole that is specially prepared for putting.
