• SAND WEDGE

  A heavy, lofted golf club that is used for playing from sand bunkers.

• SCRATCH

  A zero golf handicap.

• SCRATCH GOLFER

  A golfer who has no handicap.

• SET UP

  To position yourself to strike the golf ball.

• SEVEN IRON

  An iron golf club used for a distance of 145-165.

• SHAFT

  The part of the golf club joined to the head.

• SHANK

  A misshot struck by the golf club's hosel. Travels to the right of the intended target.

• SHORT GAME

  The part of the game that is made up of chip shots, pitching and putting.

• SHORT IRONS

  The highly lofted golf irons.

• SHOTGUN START

  In golf tournaments when golfers are to start at different holes; a firing of a shotgun may be used as a signal to start play.

• SINK A PUTT

  Hole a putt.

• SIX IRON

  An iron golf club that gives a distance of 170-190 yards.

• SKINS

  A golf game that awards the money to the golfer with the lowest score on a hole. In case of a tie, the game continues until someone wins.

• SKY

  Hit underneath the golf ball sending it much higher than intended.

• SLICE

  A golf shot that curves strongly from left to right as a result of sidespin.

• SNAP-HOOK

  To hit a golf hot with a drastic hook.

• SOLE

  The bottom of the golf club head

• SPIKE MARK

  Unwelcome mark made on the putting green by the cleats on a golf shoe.

• SQUARE STANCE

  Placing your feet in a line parallel to the direction you which the golf ball to travel.

• STABLEFORD

  A method of scoring that uses points instead of strokes.

• STANCE

  The position of your feet when addressing the golf ball

• STRAIGHT FACED

  Refers to a golf club with little or no loft on the face.

• STROKE

  The forward motion of the golf club head made with the intent to strike the golf ball.

• STROKE PLAY

  A golf competition in which the total number of strokes for one round determines the winner.

• SUDDEN DEATH

  When in a match or stroke competition the score is tied after completing the round, play continues until one golfer wins a hole.

• SUMMER RULES

  Ordinary play according the Rules of Golf.

• SWEET SPOT

  The dead center of the face of the golf club.

• SWING

  The action of striking the golf ball.
